Royal Gorge Scenic Railway

Buckskin Joe Frontier Town ceased operation at the end of the 2010 season.   June 2015 the town is completely gone, except for some lumber piles, and the train tracks are pulled.

Part of the Buckskin Joe Frontier Town, a movie set that has been featured in several movies and TV series.

Located a few miles from the north entrance to Royal Gorge Park, this is a definite must-do if you are going to the gorge.  The town is interesting, if you are into movie history (I'm not, I prefer to skip the town), but do stop and take the train to the rim.  Probably the best view of the gorge and suspension bridge.  The train operates most of the year, weather and visitors are the limiting factors - the movie town is closed during the winter.

The train has been in operation for at least 30 years, and I think its been around much longer, just have never talked to an employee that knows for sure.  (Received an e-mail from a gentleman who stated he rode the train as a child in 1961)  Standard park-gauge gasoline (Chrysler) power, narrow cars that are tight for two adults to sit side by side.  It runs 1 1/2 miles to the rim of the gorge, probably close to a mile west of the bridge.  Numerous trestles are along the route, and there is sufficient double track that they run two trains during busy times.  They have built a nice pavilion over the rim of the gorge with spectacular views of the western half of the gorge.  If you suffer vertigo it will be challenging to get all the way out on the cantilevers, but the majority of the platform is over solid ground.  You are given about 20 minutes to enjoy the view and feed the squirrels.
