Colorado Passenger Trains

I've included small-scale park trains where you can take the kids for a ride (and adults have fun too, even if they don't admit it!)

Amtrack #5 – California Zephyr

Daily from Chicago, through Colorado via the Moffat Tunnel and Glenwood Canyon, to San Francisco
Popular ride is Denver to Glenwood Springs

Union Pacific

Steam and diesel
Service between Denver and Cheyenne during Cheyenne Frontier Days
Denver to Pueblo during Colorado State Fair
Northern 844 or Challenger 3985 provide steam power
E-9 streamliners 951, 949 and 963B provide diesel power
Historic equipment is based in Cheyenne, WY - museum and steam shop tours
Excursion schedule is usually posted April or so, not all excursions have passengers

Connects with Cumbres & Toltec in Antonito

Cable car from rim to river bottom

One mile loop track through several “historic” locales, such as, “Boot Hill” and “Tin Cup”

A variety of options – coach, gourmet meals, wine trains, mystery trains, etc.
Runs through the bottom of the Royal Gorge
2-4 hours, depends on chosen train

Runs to the summit of Pikes Peak - 14,110 feet
3.5 hr round trip, includes 30-40 minutes on the summit
Modern, Swiss made, diesel powered cog cars
Operating steam engine for rare special events
Open year-round, how close to the summit it runs depends on weather

South Fork / Creede - Wagon Wheel Gap

Start-up operation between Creede and South Fork
Steam power and rolling stock is in Monte Vista at the Rio Grande Historical Societies headquarters
Small depot has been moved on-site in South Fork, nice depot at Wagon Wheel Gap
Extended legal battles have slowed start-up
Sept 08 - a handful of Creede residents have successfully convinced the State to terminate the railroads right-of-way in Creede.  Plans are to now end the line about a mile outside of Creede.
Aug 11 - They have a railbus and are running a full schedule between South Fork and Wagon Wheel Gap.  Steam engine is in the shop and they are hoping for it to be operational in about 3 years.
