Rails and Ales 2014

Rails and Ales 2014

June 21, 2014 arrived warm and partly cloudy.  Weather forecast was typical Colorado - might rain, might blow, might be hot.  Added umbrellas, sun screen and bug spray to the carry-ons.  A large hat and lawn chairs completed the load.

Just under 1,000 paying customers and about 125 staff climbed on the train and headed out.  This is the largest group they have ever had at Fir.

Fir is about 2 1/2 hours from Alamosa and is only reachable by rail.  They have a nice outdoor concert venue, complete with Forest Service style log seats.  Bring a lawn chair, you can rent one there, but they go fast.  Bar-B-Que is usually brought in from LaVeta, but this year San Luis Valley Brewing in Alamosa did the cooking; not too shabby, they do a very good Q.

30 Colorado brewers were there with plenty of beer to drink.  Some brought their best sellers, while others tried new brews on us.  I don't remember who it was, but there was a fantastic coconut beer!  I had a hard time staying away from Left Hand's Milk Stout, and anything Oskar Blues was serving up.

A local "southwest folk" band, The Rifters, was on hand.  This was the second time we've caught them at Fir.  Great tunes, great setting, great beer and food.

All to soon it was time to load the train for the ride down the hill to reality.  No one got stupid or overly obnoxious.  A young foursome in our car was entertaining and apologized for their antics, but they really were well under control.

Oh, and the weather?  Superb!  Upper 80s, partly cloudy and enough breeze to keep it comfy.
