Rio Grande Scenic Railroad

A start-up in 2006, they have rapidly acquired equipment and operate 170 miles of shortline, from Walsenburg, through Alamosa, to Antonito.  They also operate into, and past, Monte Vista.  In addition to operating a tourist railroad, they also haul freight for Union Pacific throughout the area.

Tourist rides run between Alamosa and LaVeta, Alamosa and Monte Vista, and Alamosa and Antonito.  Bus/train rides also are ran to Great Sand Dunes National Monument.

A variety of trains are operated, including concert, dinner, mystery, and scenic trains.  They also connect with the Cumbres & Toltec in Antonito.  (Now, if someone could connect Chama NM with Durango and Farmington, most of the original D&RG San Juan extension would be back in operation!)  Concerts are held at Fir, approximately half way between Alamosa and LaVeta.  The site is only reachable by train.  Going to a concert there is a definite must-do.

Instead of regurgitating what I've written elsewhere, check out my Colorado Railroad History pages for the history of southwest Colorado railroading.

Operations are based out of Alamosa.
